In the Panhandle
Navarre is located in Florida’s panhandle, about 25 miles east of Pensacola. It contains about four miles of beachfront along the Gulf of Mexico. Navarre Beach is famous for its emerald swimming waters and white sugar sand beaches.
Forty one years before it became the Navarre we know today, the city —along with nearby Santa Rosa Sound— was part of a community called Eagen. After World War I, Colonel Guy Wyman purchased a plot of land in the community and settled there with his new wife. It was his wife, Noelle, who gave the name Navarre to the land.
Colonel Wyman was forced to sell the land during the Great Depression, and Navarre became public land. Part of that property became Navarre Beach Marine Park, a 150 acre public beach park managed by Santa Rosa County. It is nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and Santa Rosa Sound offering water activities in both. The 1,545 foot pier, the longest in Florida, is a favorite of anglers.
Even if you’ve never been to Florida, you may have seen Navarre Beach. The spot was the location for the 1977 film Jaws 2.
